Aaron Peck, Staff Reporter March 9, 2023
The months of Jan. through March are notorious for being the season of depression, where spirits are low and the jovial times of summer feel like a distant memory.  After the conclusion of the holiday season, many people experience seasonal depression where they feel dejected, fatigued and hopeless. However, we do not have to subject ourselves to feelings of depression as there are simple measures we can take to help alleviate our mental health issues.

For an organization in charge of delegating funding, it seems some representatives in ASCSU have repeatedly mishandled funds and remained unaccountable.
Seriously: Campus climbers develop allergy, not wearing shirts

Seriously: Campus climbers develop allergy, not wearing shirts

Grant Coursey, Staff Reporter March 6, 2023
While the recent rise in Avian Flu has captured the media's attention, a no less sinister disease is spreading through the Colorado State University climbing community. It’s called a Shirt 'Allergy,' despite being contagious, and its effects are hard to miss. Upon attempting a climb or, in the worst cases presented, merely stepping foot in a climbing gym, afflicted climbers develop a near-pathological aversion to keeping their shirts on.

Seriously: CSU still standing in ‘The Last of Us’ makes perfect sense

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director March 1, 2023
Recently an episode of “The Last of Us,” a show based on a popular video game with the same name streaming on HBO, showed the two main characters arriving at the campus of the "University of Eastern Colorado,” the “Home of the Big Horns.”  Many fans of the show speculated that this was a nod to Colorado State University and our beloved CAM the Ram, and the official Colorado State University Instagram and Twitter accounts posted about the possible wink toward our campus.

Miller: College student stress is increasing, leads to bad habits

Jack Miller, Staff Reporter February 28, 2023
College is often thought of as an exciting time with new freedoms and independence. However, over the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of college students experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety.   In a recent study done by The American Institute of Stress, 8 out of 10 college students have said they experience “high levels” of stress, while 60% of students also reported high levels of anxiety.
A Transfort MAX bus at Spring Creek Station

Burke: Thanking your bus drivers is the least you can do

Callum Burke, Staff Reporter February 27, 2023
Colorado State University students implement a wide variety of transportation methods into their daily lives.  For the most part, CSU is proud of its bike-friendly campus, which contains several different bike lanes and routes designed to keep riders safe. Although bikes and other simpler methods of getting to and from campus and beyond are often in the spotlight or praised by the community, it is the bus system that truly deserves a piece of this positive recognition.

Henry: More education will help us better celebrate Black History Month

Brendan Henry, Staff Reporter February 22, 2023
Feb. is the dedicated month to celebrating Black heritage and culture and how it has positively impacted American society.  It is easy to see the reminders on social media and in the public sphere about the celebration of Black History this month, but do we take the time throughout the year to actively appreciate the impact Black Americans have had on our society as a whole?
Egg prices at Safeway in Fort Collins, Colorado Feb. 17.

Peck: Our food system tells us why groceries are so expensive

Aaron Peck, Staff Reporter February 21, 2023
If you shopped at any grocery store recently, you probably noticed the ridiculous inflation of prices for everyday food items such as eggs, milk and bread. A quick stop at any store for a few items can easily turn into an expensive ordeal. It feels like forever since I have been able to keep the bill under $20. The issue affects people nationwide, with the average American spending an extra $72.01 a month on groceries. Many people are feeling the strain on their finances and are forced to be more frugal with their purchases.

When shopping around Fort Collins, you might have noticed that stores now charge a disposable bag fee in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of plastic bags. The city of Fort Collins is trying to do its part to bring America down from being ranked number two as the worst global polluting country in the world, second to China.  Experts are pointing to a drastic decline in environmental health, so much so that Earth’s environment and weather are already visibly changing. We are feeling the effects right now, which has eroded many folks' hope that any significant environmental change will ever occur.
Peck: We are capable of improving our attention spans

Peck: We are capable of improving our attention spans

Aaron Peck, Staff Reporter February 15, 2023
Nowadays, many students struggle to pay attention in class or aimlessly scroll their phones while attempting to do homework. They often lack the ability to focus on one thing for extended periods of time and are easily distracted by any disruption.  One of the explanations for the decreasing attention span of people is a technology and social media specifically. Social media provides instant satisfaction that individuals use to boost self-esteem or improve their mood. In turn, this creates a feedback loop where the user becomes dependent on instant satisfaction.
LTTE: CSU basketball fans shouting 'Russia' need education, respect

LTTE: CSU basketball fans shouting ‘Russia’ need education, respect

Guest Author February 15, 2023
A chant of “Russia, Russia, Russia” erupted from the student section of Moby arena during a recent Colorado State University men’s basketball game against Utah State University. The chant was directed at Max Shulga, a Utah State player from Kyiv, Ukraine.  It has been suggested that the chant arose from ignorance. That if the students only knew of the atrocities Russia is inflicting on the Ukrainian people during its year-long unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, they would have not used this uncivil chant as a tool to try to win a basketball game.

Miller: COVID-19 made college less challenging, your degree less competitive

Jack Miller, Staff Reporter February 14, 2023
Although the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t as severe as it once was, there are still systems in our society that have yet to come back to normal. An example of this is our education system.   Blind-sided by the pandemic, schools quickly went to online learning which led to different curriculum, different activities and different systems of grading. Although we are done with nationwide zoom classes, many classes still offer hybrid options, online tests and flexible deadlines.
