CSU women’s soccer heading to Colorado Springs for first MW road matches

The Rams are tripping down I-25 this weekend for a pair of in-state Mountain West match ups.

Colorado State (3-6-2, 0-1-1 MW) women’s soccer will be in Colorado Springs to take on Colorado College (4-6-1, 2-0-0 MW) Friday, and Air Force (3-6-1, 1-0-1 MW) Sunday.

The games will mark the second crack at MW play this season for the Rams, who got off to a shaky start in their MW ventures last weekend.

“There is very little time to sit around and sulk,” CSU head coach Bill Hempen said. “So we keep playing right away, with some specific things in mind. (The players) aren’t worse for the wear, they are excited about being out here and getting another chance going forward.”

The Rams are moving on from a 2-2 tie against Fresno State (1-7-1, 0-1-1 MW) and a humbling 2-0 loss at the hands of San Jose State (4-4-2, 2-0-0 MW).

CSU was picked to finish in 11th place in the MW this season, one spot up from the cellar. Sitting in ninth place in MW standings after one weekend of play, Hempen is not concerned with pre-season evaluations, or looking to prove them wrong for that matter.

“Haven’t even thought about them until just now,” Hempen said. “From our standpoint, we haven’t given them any reason to make them think any different. So until we do that, we are who we are.”

At this point in the season, the Rams certainly are who they were they thought they were, but a strong showing this weekend can block out all the haters.

Colorado College comes into the weekend full steam ahead, notching two conference wins against Nevada (3-5-2, 0-1-1 MW) and UNLV (5-6-0, 0-0-2 MW). A matchup to watch will be how CSU keeper Jesse McGinley handles CC’s shot-happy Sarah Schweiss. Schweiss leads the MW with 49 shot attempts. McGinley is currently averaging 4.73 saves per game, good for third in the MW.

Air Force comes off a solid opening weekend of MW play, tallying a win against UNLV and playing to a tie with Nevada.

The Rams take on the Tigers Friday at 3 p.m. and the Falcons Sunday at noon.
