A personal essay is a work of nonfiction that utilizes storytelling and literary elements to make a statement about a universal theme. It should reflect or sample an aspect of your personal life and is submitted to the publication for approval.
Readers may submit personal essays to esouza@collegian.com.
- Please include your full name and job title. If you are a student, please include your major and year. Anonymity will be granted on a case-by-case basis if the writer can reasonably prove that publishing their name would endanger their personal safety or expose personal information.
- Please refrain from including personal attacks on Collegian authors or people referenced in Collegian articles. Feel free to critique what someone wrote, but ad hominem attacks cannot and will not be published.
- Please use paragraph form. Lists or atypical essay formats are difficult for The Collegian’s copy editing and design teams to format correctly.
- Please cite all facts and provide links or citations where any facts in your essay were mentioned. We retain the right to fact check and remove or edit anything we find not factually sound.
- We retain the editorial right to edit content for length and clarity. We will also edit information that poses a legal liability to Rocky Mountain Student Media Corporation. We will never edit a piece to change the message or viewpoint being conveyed.
- If you are a professor or instructor, please do not assign submitting a personal essay as a class assignment. Personal essay submissions are meant to be from the community, not obligations from students.
- If The Collegian would like to publish your personal essay, a member of our staff will reach out to you. If we choose not to publish your essay, you will not hear from us. Due to the high number of submissions, we cannot respond to every submission we decide not to publish. Please do not send repeated emails checking on status.
- While we accept simultaneous submissions, please ensure that other publications receiving your submissions also accept simultaneous submissions.
- The Collegian only accepts personal essays that have not been published elsewhere — including magazines, literary journals, news outlets, or any other form of publication, either in print or online.
- Please keep your submission at or under 1,200 words. Unless a submission is at or under the 700 word mark, expect the essay to be published online only.
Thank you. We look forward to hearing from you.
