Eckburg: Profit is not fulfillment, systemic change needed

Eckburg: Profit is not fulfillment, systemic change needed

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director April 12, 2023
The American Dream has long been shown to be a false reality — it’s unlikely you’ll become Jeff Bezos in your lifetime. There are so many factors that contribute to whether you’ll make a ton of money, and it's stressful to know that you have no control over some of them.  Instead of prioritizing profit, why can’t we switch the conversation to “How can I be happy?” It’s clear that even if we do prioritize profit, it’s hard to even get a foot in the door and actually become successful in that way.
Seriously: 4 ways to tell your parents you flunked out of college

Seriously: 4 ways to tell your parents you flunked out of college

Aaron Peck, Staff Reporter April 11, 2023
As the end of the spring semester quickly approaches, some students face the difficult task of telling their parents that they failed all their classes and dropped out of college.  Whether it is because of a drinking problem that got out of control, or that you “accidentally” slept through all your morning classes once again — sometimes college just gets the best of you.
Lopez: Keep Colorado a safe space for trans people

Lopez: Keep Colorado a safe space for trans people

Dominique Lopez, Staff Reporter April 11, 2023
On March 31, Fort Collins hosted its first-ever Transgender Day of Visibility protest that discussed the issues appearing in legislation being proposed to discriminate against those who identify as transgender. The protest was announced in The Coloradoan on March 28 to invite those interested in attending. Within Colorado, there are many forms of legislation that have been set in place to protect those within the LGBTQ+ community, as well as reproductive rights. However, there are still legislators who try to propose bills that will challenge the legislation that is put in place to protect those who are being challenged daily throughout the nation.
Eckburg: Public servants should meet expectations — do your research

Eckburg: Public servants should meet expectations — do your research

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director April 6, 2023
Public servants tend to come in the form of government officials, but in our current political climate, it seems our expectations about what public servants should be doing for the public are a little blurry.  Someone serving the public should represent the public, which is why we are in charge of electing these officials. This is also why it’s so important for anyone who can vote to make sure they do in every election — although a lot of people focus on national elections or state-wide elections, local elections are an area that allows one to get a feel for politics.

Miller: ChatGPT’s usefulness in college is major-dependent

Jack Miller, Staff Reporter April 5, 2023
Chat GPT is a new artificial intelligence chatbot produced in late 2022. Now used by millions of people, this program can provide detailed responses to complex questions about any topic in a matter of seconds.   After its quick rise in usage and notoriety, it’s become a regular resource for students and professors at universities across the nation. Many professors have incorporated Chat GPT into their classes and have been teaching students how to use it, while some people worry that this technology will make it easy for students to cheat on their assignments and tests.

Seriously: Police arrest anyone with a Stanley, bike thief apprehended

Fort Collins Police Services are back in the media spotlight after a string of seemingly random arrests were reported around Colorado State University’s main campus. That’s right, it appears the local police have their hands full yet again in an issue involving our local student body.  Last week, The Collegian staff received word about peculiar arrests, seemingly random, being reported all around CSU. As the weather continues rising in temperature, it seems crime rates have as well, and the local police force is taking law enforcement duties very seriously.

Peck: March Madness is the best American sports tournament to exist

Aaron Peck, Staff Reporter March 27, 2023
Every March, student-athletes compete in the NCAA Division I basketball tournaments to determine the best Men's and Women’s college basketball teams in the country.  The first-ever NCAA Division I basketball tournament took place in 1939 and saw the University of Oregon Ducks defeat the Ohio State University Buckeyes to become the first national champion. March Madness is one of those sporting events that feels so ingrained in American culture.

Fort Collins is home to many mom-and-pop shops for you to peruse, especially in Old Town. If your family comes up to visit, Old Town is the first place you want to show off aside from campus.  The plethora of goodies to be found in these shops come from all over, but it is so special to find something that speaks to you and then learn that it comes from a local artist or craftsperson.
Seriously: Lying about college in a pandemic is the natural thing to do

Seriously: Lying about college in a pandemic is the natural thing to do

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director March 21, 2023
As a senior counting down the weeks to graduation and repeating the dreary steps of my day-to-day schedule, I’ve thought a lot about the stories I’ll tell about my time here. I live as a functional recluse most of the time, but, like you normies, I have the capability to lie.  To be honest, college amid a pandemic was not giving the same energy as the crazy campus life you’ve undoubtedly seen in movies, but that’s why lying is such an important skill to develop.
Lopez: Colorado should keep pursuing ditching daylight savings

Lopez: Colorado should keep pursuing ditching daylight savings

Dominique Lopez, Staff Reporter March 21, 2023
When the clocks jumped forward an hour in November, I heard talk that Colorado had voted for daylight savings times to no longer be an issue that plagued the state. Despite the bill being passed for Colorado to have year-round daylight savings, the chances of it being enacted soon lessen as it is more challenging than originally perceived. What would a time changeless state would actually look like? There are only two states in the entire United States that do not have daylight savings times constantly rotating, most of Arizona and all of Hawaii.
