An update of Army regulation 670-1 Saturday would ban tattoos below the elbow and above the neck line for future recruits, according to Associated Press Staff. 

The change was proposed by Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond Chandler and would also address the protocol for nail polish, piercings, hair styles, make-up and length of sideburns, according to the article.

Chandler told Stars and Stripes that the goal is to lessen the focus on the soldier’s appearance so that they stand out for their achievements instead of their looks.
