Sports brief: CSU volleyball moves up to No. 17 in AVCA poll

Now 12 games into its 2013 season, the CSU volleyball team remains undefeated. The Rams are one of only four teams in the NCAA still supporting a perfect record along with No. 1 Washington (10-0), No. 11 North Carolina (13-0) and Missouri (16-0).

CSU’s recent success has launched it to the No. 17 spot in the country after the AVCA’s weekly coaches’ poll was released Monday. The ranking marks the best for the Rams since Sept. 5, 2011, when the Rams took down No. 5 Nebraska at Moby. The 17 spot was a two-slot bump for the Rams, after a previous rank of No. 19 before their game against New Mexico at The Pit in Albuquerque.

After the Rams got out to a 2-0 lead in the set count, the Lobos battled back to force a fifth set which CSU was able to walk away with. The match at New Mexico was the third of CSU’s conference games this season, and only MW opponents remain for the Rams after finishing non-conference play with a perfect record for the second time in program history.

Next up for CSU is a match at Nevada (2-12, 0-2 MW) on Thursday before returning home the following week to take on Utah State (9-3, 3-1 MW) at Moby.
