LTTE: Colorado's wolf reintroduction plan needs improvement

LTTE: Colorado’s wolf reintroduction plan needs improvement

Guest Author February 8, 2023
My name is Mark Kohn and I graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University in the winter of 2022. I hold a degree in Human Dimensions of Natural Resources as well as a minor in International Development. In 2020, voters in Colorado passed Proposition 114 in favor of wolf reintroduction. Passing only with the slimmest of margins, Prop. 114 ensured that Colorado agencies use the best available science to introduce wolves to their historical ranges in Colorado. It has been three years since voters raced to their ballot drop-offs to show support or opposition to Prop 114, so where are the wolves?

On Jan. 30, the Fort Collins Police Department posted a very intriguing Tweet online.  For an account ordinarily used to cover local car crashes, timely traffic issues and the occasional retweet of Larimer County’s most wanted list, this particular tweet struck media attention as it contained something entirely different. Something rarely, if ever, posted about by a police department.

Peck: FoCo citizens, town benefit from active transportation

Aaron Peck, Staff Reporter February 6, 2023
Fort Collins holds over 200 miles of dedicated bike lanes making it one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country. Given the high student population in the city, these bike lanes provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way for students to move around.   Building bike lanes may appear like a simple change in city design, but its consequences prove to be beneficial for the community’s quality of life. In Dec. 2022, the City of Fort Collins adopted the Active Modes plan which aims to promote walking, biking and other modes of active transportation.

Eckburg: We shouldn’t have to justify absences

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director February 1, 2023
College life can act as a bridge to your adulthood and career — you take specialized classes while often working or maintaining an internship, and that can be a lot of stress! Sometimes, college life can make you feel like your brain is melting.  So, when those days pop up, and you’ve realized it’s mid-week and you have not had a single day that was not dedicated to working a full shift or attending a full course load — or both! — and your brain melt is fully initiated, it’s okay to skip class.

Fort Collins and riding a bike go together like CAM the Ram and gameday – They simply do not exist without each other.  In fact, the popularity of biking is so much so that The League of American Bicyclists named Colorado State University as one of five schools in America to obtain platinum-level biking.

Snow is an integral part of the Colorado winter lifestyle, and Fort Collins is no exception.  On average, Fort Collins receives nearly 48 inches of snowfall annually, and with that comes a lot of fun prospects involving the powdery fluff blinding you from your kitchen window.
LTTE: What is ASCSU really doing to help CSU students?

I, the author, have made the choice to write this article anonymously for a number of reasons. However, the main reason is because of fear of retaliation.  I have seen and know many students that have come forward about the problems within The Associated Students of Colorado State University, and those students have been retaliated against. Anywhere from harassment through texting and social media, to lies being spread about them and damaging their reputation. I, as a student, should not be afraid to ask questions about these issues, yet I am.

A week ago, roughly 1,500 people gathered and marched to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The group of Colorado State University students, Fort Collins community members and Colorado activists symbolically marched on a route that acknowledged Black families that settled in Fort Collins in the early 1900s and culminated in a set of speeches at the Lory Student Center from local politicians and community leaders. Only 250 people stuck around for the speeches following the march.

Eckburg: A tuition increase is not the answer, students assemble

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director January 19, 2023
Colorado State University's Board of Governors is planning a tuition increase for the coming year, which will continue to widen the gap between it and the national average for in-and-out-of-state tuition.  This new tuition increase comes amid a lot of turmoil regarding faculty and staff pay on campus, especially with Colorado’s minimum wage reaching $13.65 this year; however, is CSU really able to justify the rise in tuition considering the value of the degree the students leave with?

As a third-year Business Major at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, life was moving very fast in the Spring of 2022. I was balancing a heavy class load and working 15-20 hours a week. The summer months were on the horizon, and I had not yet secured an internship when I came across an open position at CSU Spur. I decided to investigate further, but little did I know at the time that this was going to be such an engaging and rewarding experience.

New Colorado State University President to be, Bamy Barson, announced her plan for an office of president administrative partnership with BigCorp last Thursday. “During my time at BigCorp, I worked with a lot of good people,” said Barson in her announcement email. “They know how to best maximize profits while delivering top-notch service in flexible roles.”
