Eckburg: Goodbye beautiful Collegian; I will love you for a thousand lifetimes!

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director May 1, 2023
I first joined The Collegian in Oct. 2020, the first semester back after COVID-19 shut everything down, after hearing about Rocky Mountain Student Media through my news writing class in March 2020. I closed my laptop after the first (virtual) opinion meeting I attended, buzzing. I had never been in a room with so many creative, interesting and curious people.

Even though I've studied journalism for the last four years, I've learned more in The Collegian's newsroom than I have in any classroom.

Miller: Climbing is trending; are nonclimbers missing out?

Jack Miller, Staff Reporter April 27, 2023
Now that the weather is getting nice, my friends and I are thrilled that we can do outside activities again. We’ve been hiking, swimming, playing volleyball or spike ball, but more than anything, my friends love to climb.   I’ve given climbing a few tries, but all I seemed to get out of it were sore forearms and blistered hands. When my friends started to get into it, I figured that their interests would fade after a few weeks and we’d get back to doing the things I also enjoyed. I was dead wrong.
Burke: Over-the-ear headphones are back, bettering music experiences

Burke: Over-the-ear headphones are back, bettering music experiences

Callum Burke, Staff Reporter April 26, 2023
If you attend Colorado State University’s campus on a regular basis, witnessing students listening to music on their commutes to and from class is extremely common. Also, seeing that CSU is a fairly large campus containing nearly 4,800 acres, it makes perfect sense that people implement music into their daily lives to make their commutes more enjoyable. Now, the specific method that each commuter chooses to listen to their music varies. There are many different types of headphones to choose from, and even speakers that students use to enhance their audio experience. Although, if you are one of these people who listen to music on campus with a blaring speaker, please stop, it is very annoying.

Trends come in waves and in many forms — whether it’s a TikTok dance, a trending sound or a sudden interest in heavy patterns. Generation Z has been particularly influential in shaping trends over the last few years, and the pandemic pushing everyday interactions online has only amplified that influence.

College is a place where individuals go to expand their worldview, learn new skills and increase their chances of achieving success. On the other hand, college provides many with their first taste of freedom.  College is supposed to be a space for higher education where all people can come for the possibility of a better future. However, a disturbing pattern has been discovered across virtually every school in the country that is leaving some students disappointed with their college experience.

Lopez: Sexual Assault Awareness Month must include Indigenous women

Dominique Lopez, Staff Reporter April 19, 2023
One in three women experiences sexual or physical violence in their lifetime, according to the World Health Organization. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which draws attention to sexual violence survivors in the United States and around the world. However, this idea of awareness seems to exclude a very prominent portion of the United States — Indigenous people.

With the recent Associated Students of Colorado State University elections in the rearview mirror, there is a lot to unpack and consider for the future.  Voting occurred April 3-5, and the results named Nick DeSalvo and Alex Silverhart as president and vice president-elect; Ava Ayala as the speaker of the senate and seven students were voted into respected senator positions.
Eckburg: Profit is not fulfillment, systemic change needed

Eckburg: Profit is not fulfillment, systemic change needed

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director April 12, 2023
The American Dream has long been shown to be a false reality — it’s unlikely you’ll become Jeff Bezos in your lifetime. There are so many factors that contribute to whether you’ll make a ton of money, and it's stressful to know that you have no control over some of them.  Instead of prioritizing profit, why can’t we switch the conversation to “How can I be happy?” It’s clear that even if we do prioritize profit, it’s hard to even get a foot in the door and actually become successful in that way.
Seriously: 4 ways to tell your parents you flunked out of college

Seriously: 4 ways to tell your parents you flunked out of college

Aaron Peck, Staff Reporter April 11, 2023
As the end of the spring semester quickly approaches, some students face the difficult task of telling their parents that they failed all their classes and dropped out of college.  Whether it is because of a drinking problem that got out of control, or that you “accidentally” slept through all your morning classes once again — sometimes college just gets the best of you.
Lopez: Keep Colorado a safe space for trans people

Dominique Lopez, Staff Reporter April 11, 2023
On March 31, Fort Collins hosted its first-ever Transgender Day of Visibility protest that discussed the issues appearing in legislation being proposed to discriminate against those who identify as transgender. The protest was announced in The Coloradoan on March 28 to invite those interested in attending. Within Colorado, there are many forms of legislation that have been set in place to protect those within the LGBTQ+ community, as well as reproductive rights. However, there are still legislators who try to propose bills that will challenge the legislation that is put in place to protect those who are being challenged daily throughout the nation.
Eckburg: Public servants should meet expectations — do your research

Eckburg: Public servants should meet expectations — do your research

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director April 6, 2023
Public servants tend to come in the form of government officials, but in our current political climate, it seems our expectations about what public servants should be doing for the public are a little blurry.  Someone serving the public should represent the public, which is why we are in charge of electing these officials. This is also why it’s so important for anyone who can vote to make sure they do in every election — although a lot of people focus on national elections or state-wide elections, local elections are an area that allows one to get a feel for politics.
