Rams rally after three-game skid, take San Diego State series 2-1

The Colorado State softball team manged to get back on track this weekend by going 2-1 in a three-game series on the road at San Diego State.

The Rams managed to stop a three-game skid by winning the second game of a doubleheader against the Aztecs Friday, and then taking the rubber match Saturday by a score of 3-1 behind senior infielder Kristina Akiona’s two RBIs.

The Aztecs managed to win the first game of the series 3-2 by capitalizing on an error by the Rams infield, resulting in the game-winning run.

Freshman catcher Amber Nelson’s double in the sixth inning scored both of the Rams’ runs, tying the game at 2-2 before the error occurred.

In the second game, the Rams entered the final inning trailing the Aztecs 4-3, but CSU loaded the bases and freshman catcher Lauren Buchanan drove in two runs with an RBI double to put the Rams up 5-4. Later in the inning, junior infielder Taryn Arcarese was hit by a pitch, advancing a runner home and sealing the deal for the Rams in a 6-4 win.

“We got a great performance from freshmen Amber Nelson and Lauren Buchanan,” head coach Jen Fisher said following the split. “Both of them have a championship mentality.”

CSU found themselves down 1-0 in the first inning of the rubber match Saturday due in part to SDSU’s Jenavee Peres’ sacrifice fly that brought home a base runner. But, the Rams’ Akiona evened the score with a home run in the second inning and CSU never looked back.

Akiona notched an RBI double in the following inning, and sophomore infielder Savannah Clark followed that up with a home run in the fifth inning.

Colorado State (18-17, 4-5 Mountain West) head back to Fort Collins to take on New Mexico in a three game series beginning Friday, April 15.
