At least 13 dead in Oregon community college shooting Thursday

Update 2:36 p.m. Thursday:

The shooter is now dead, said Douglas County Sheriff John Handlen at a press conference Thursday.

The shooter was identified as a 20-year-old male student.

“There was an exchange of gunfire, the shooter threat was neutralized and officers continued to sweep the campus looking for other threats,” said Handlen. “At this point, it is a very active scene and it is a very active investigation. “

Handlen said there will be “a thorough and rather lengthy investigation.”

Update 2:20 p.m. Thursday:

Authorities are now confirming that 13 people are dead after a gunman opened fire at the Umpqua Community College campus in Roseburg, Oregon, according to NBC News. Police say the shooter is no longer a threat.

At least 10 people died after an active shooting incident Thursday at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, according to the Oregon State Police. The suspect is now in custody, it is not clear if he is dead or alive.

An exact number of injuries or fatalities is not clear at this time, but more than 20 people are wounded.

The shooting happened at around 11:38 a.m. Mountain Time, according to police. Shootings and occurred at Snyder Hall, according to a spokesperson for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

There have been over 40 school shootings in 2015. 

Victims of the UCC shooting are being sent to Mercy Medical Center.

Approximately 3,100 full-time students are enrolled in Umpqua Community College, which is a two-year institution in Roseburg, Oregon. The college is about three hours south of Portland.

The Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms sent agents and a K9 team from Portland to UCC. More information will be released at a later time.
