Van Voris: CSU Mountain Campus made this a summer to remember

McKenna Van Voris, Collegian Columnist August 26, 2024
I knew one thing for certain when planning out my summer: that I would not be going home. Living in the same suburban town my entire life meant that coming to CSU was my ticket out. Don’t get me wrong, I love my beautiful outdoorsy Northern California town. But I’ve always wanted more.

Pavelko: First-year friends don’t have to be your forever BFFs

Hana Pavelko, Collegian Columnist August 26, 2024
Sitting down in a huge lecture hall during the first day of classes is intimidating. You start out introducing yourself to the person next to you, and by the end of class, the two of you are exchanging phone numbers and Snapchats. There’s texting over the next few days, hang-out plans are being made and you feel like you've made your first friend in college.

Souza: Doing things for sake of joy is OK

Emma Souza, Collegian Columnist August 22, 2024
We take ourselves way too seriously and pretend like it’s normal. I’m all for competitiveness, and I’m all for ambition — I recognize the importance of having drive, of having aspirations, dreaming of being the best and chasing the top echelon of our respective fields. But when did we stop having fun?

Souza: The opinion desk is uniquely important

Emma Souza, Collegian Columnist August 19, 2024
Once upon a time, I was a stubborn know-it-all. Now I’m a stubborn know-it-all who writes for The Collegian! A year ago, give or take a month and change, I went into this writing gig firmly believing that I’d cover heartfelt stories or breaking news around Fort Collins.

Souza: Campus job attainability is inaccurately portrayed

Emma Souza, Collegian Columnist August 5, 2024
Not to speak on behalf of all broke college students, but I’d pretty much do anything for an extra penny or two. Especially during the school semester, when money seems to practically evaporate out of my wallet — when, realistically, it’s my fault for ordering Uber Eats three out of seven days of the week.

Dollaghan: Free speech is damaging to universities’ antidiscrimination policies

Addy Dollaghan, Collegian Columnist August 1, 2024
America’s Founding Fathers prided themselves on creating a free country for its citizens, especially one where people could speak unencumbered by government restrictions. Controversies surrounding free speech have become more prominent in recent years; for example, Harrison Butker’s commencement speech at Benedictine College in May ignited significant backlash for his anti-LGBTQIA+ comments and misogynistic undertones. Similarly, many Colorado State University students were outraged at Riley Gaines’ presence on campus in April due to her outward scorn for transgender athletes competing in sports.

Masia: Greek life is a cult on CSU’s campus

Sophia Masia, Collegian Columnist April 30, 2024
The issue with labeling a group as a cult is that its followers rarely ever openly identify as cult members — they’re just members, believers or followers. For the purpose of this article, I’m defining a cult as devotion to a person, idea, object, movement or organization because there’s nothing wrong with devotion.

Pavelko: Cultish fandoms are unwelcoming, polarizing

Hana Pavelko, Collegian Columnist April 30, 2024
People flock to the theaters, desperately trying to buy tickets for opening night so they can claim they were one of the first ones to see it. Some wear their official merch shirts with the movie poster on them; some wear costumes they spent weeks on to ensure that each detail was correct. Everyone stocks up on popcorn and candy so they can stay until the very end of the movie because are you really a fan if you leave before the end-credits scene?
