Students at Stanford University in California have reinvented an object found in nearly everywhere in everyday life: the light bulb.

The redesigned light switch, called Start.Home, was created as an entry to the Solar Decathlon green-building competition. The new switch aims to make energy efficiency an easy, convenient thing to do.

“”We want to give people a sense of understanding of their energy consumption, and to empower them to make better energy behaviors because they want to,” Jason Bade, leader of the project’s interaction design team, told the Stanford news. “If they actively reduce their energy consumption in the house, then hopefully they’ll behave that way in the rest of the world too.”
