Rams soccer team snaps 4-game skid with 3-1 win at UNC

The Colorado State women’s soccer team (2-4-1) got back on track Sunday with a 3-1 win at Northern Colorado (4-3) in the final game of the Colorado Cup.

The win snapped a 4-game skid for the Rams, and was their first since Aug. 23. The Rams are 2-1 in Colorado Cup games, but 0-4 in their other contests. They tied for first in the Colorado Cup standings, but finished second in goal differential.

Gianna Marconi put CSU on board first with a penalty kick in the 22nd minute. The Rams found some breathing room when Taylor Nelson struck the back of the net to extend the team’s lead to 2-0.

UNC cut into the lead in the second half when Mariel Gutierrez scored off of a deflection to cut the Rams’ lead to 2-1 in the 57th minute.

But once again, it was Taylor Nelson who came through for CSU. The Fort Collins native scored her second goal of the game, and of her career, in the 69th minute to push the lead to 3-1.

The Bears tried to make a late push, but CSU goalkeeper Jesse McGinley would have none of it. Gutierrez had a penalty kick with a minute remaining but McGinley made the save to seal the 3-1 win for CSU.

The Rams are back on the road Friday to take on Nebraska-Omaha at 6 p.m.
