The Associated Students of Colorado State University convened Oct. 2 for the seventh session of the 55th Senate.
Senate kept it brief this week, with the only items on the agenda being intern ratifications.
During gallery input, students expressed concerns about recent revisions to CSU’s free speech and assembly policies. Students said they were unaware of the revisions to the policies and felt that this could threaten freedom of expression on campus.
Senators assured students that legislation is currently being written to address free speech concerns on campus and called on the university to be transparent with students.
Following gallery input, the legislative, judicial and executive branches provided updates on their respective work and initiatives.
Director of Unified Success Ben Gregg announced a new classroom presentation campaign aimed at informing students about how to get involved in ASCSU and make their voices heard.
Director of Basic Needs Lauren Davis shared that ASCSU’s annual Wellness Wonderland event will be held Oct. 24.
Director of Governmental Affairs Jelicity Luna announced that the governmental affairs department is currently working on voter registration initiatives to engage students in the upcoming municipal elections. Additionally, a local elections roundtable with Fort Collins’ mayoral candidates will be held Oct. 27.
Chief Justice Melanie Brousseau announced that the judicial branch bylaws and job descriptions will soon be shared with senate for approval.
Moving into confidence business, Isabella Simpson was announced as the new ASCSU chief of staff for the 2025-26 school year. Following introductions and Q&A, Simpson was ratified with unanimous consent and subsequently sworn in.
Next, Abdoulaye Ballo was announced as the cultural engagement coordinator for the Department of Unified Success. Following Q&A, Ballo was approved unanimously and subsequently sworn in.
Judah Weir was then announced as the newest member of the University Policy Review Committee. Following Q&A, Weir was ratified via voice vote and subsequently sworn in.
ASCSU Senate will resume Oct. 8.
