This Thursday in the Lory Student Center, the public is invited to participate in the CSU Swing Society’s RamEvent with food and a lot of swing dancing.
The event will run from 6-10 p.m. in the LSC Grand Ballroom. Events include free swing dance lessons from 6-7 p.m., a social dance from 7-10 p.m. and live music by a local band all night. This event is one of many that the CSU Swing Society plans to host throughout the year.
“(Our event) is free, it’s fun, and it’s a great way to meet people and get involved with an accepting, open community,” said Aja Mattise-Lorenzen, president of CSU Swing Society and a senior biology major.
Kelly John, the society’s public relations officer, says there are many ways to get involved in the group.
“Swing Society hosts weekly dances for students on campus, in addition to advertising for other local dance scenes,” said John, a junior equine science major. “We also volunteer yearly for RamRide as our big fundraiser.”
Apart from weekly dances, Swing Society partakes in multiple dance-related events around Fort Collins and Denver. Mattise-Lorenzen said the group does a lot in the community.
“We love spending time hosting dance-focused events,” Mattise-Lorenzen said. “We want to build a safe, welcoming community for students and Fort Collins residents.”
The event on Thursday in the LSC will be a great opportunity to get involved with Swing Society, and according to swing ambassador Johan Andreassen, you do not need to be a professional to get involved.
“We will be teaching beginners how to dance,” said Andreassen, a senior economic major. “We want them to feel capable of having some fun on the floor.”
