John Mattos cemented a legendary career at Colorado State University both as an athlete and as one of the schools greatest coaches of all time. A member of the mens swimming teams in the early 1970s, Mattos returned to his alma mater in 1980 to guide womens swimming and take it to new heights never before realized. Over the next 31 years, Mattos coached 24 individual conference champions, coached nine team conference champions in three different leagues (AIAW, HCAC, WAC) and was named the NCAA Division I Coach of the Year after guiding his team to a 12th place finish in the national competition. His most well-known pupil was six-time Olympic Gold Medalist Amy Van Dyken, but he also coached 10 other All-Americans including CSU hall of fame inductees Amy Brookover, Jeanette Beitz and Kristin Elliot.
