Eckburg: There is no ‘right’ way to do your 1st year

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director August 17, 2022
First and foremost, welcome to Fort Collins. When you first see your life in boxes waiting to be unpacked in a room you now share with a virtual stranger, it can be easy to feel like a small fish in a big pond.  Keeping in mind that you and the rest of your first-year peers are in the same boat is crucial to staying afloat as you adjust to life as a college student and individual.

Stella: Don’t knock the dorm experience

Michael Stella, Collegian Columnist August 12, 2022
First-year move-in is an exciting time that marks the beginning of your college experience, but it can feel stressful for a lot of reasons, and it is OK to feel that stress. It is likely the first time you are leaving home for an extended period of time, and you might not know anyone at Colorado State University. For out-of-state students, moving to a new state is stressful on its own.

LTTE: Higher ed’s anti-Blackness, in real time

Loren Branch, Guest Author July 6, 2022
This article by Dr. Sydney Freeman Jr. summarizes the reason why my previous role at Colorado State University will likely be the last time I work on anyone’s college campus. I watched that position for years, joyfully accepted and moved across the country for it. A dream come true at the time. I was on the most intentionally inclusive team I've ever experienced, with people I consider friends to this very moment. But the intentions of a few clearly did not reflect the institution as a whole, especially its leadership.

On Monday, April 11, Colorado State University's Office of Inclusive Excellence hosted Naomi Greenspan of the Academic Engagement Network. The Academic Engagement Network lists its mission as seeking "to oppose efforts to delegitimize Israel, to support robust discussion, research and education about Israel in the academy, to promote campus free expression and academic freedom and to counter antisemitism when it occurs on campus.” Greenspan advocates that opposition to Israel is inherently antisemitic. Against this backdrop, it is important to remember why Israel is so often a target of criticism: Israel is a racially segregated state that continues to engage in deliberate ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

Meltzner: Thank you, CSU, for not being what I wanted but what I needed

Meltzner: Thank you, CSU, for not being what I wanted but what I needed

JD Meltzner, Opinion Editor May 4, 2022
As I was preparing to write this column, I had no real idea about what I wanted to say about my time in Fort Collins. Procrastinating, I began thinking ahead to the week's schoolwork, as I've done so many times before, to plan out my week. I filled with that signature Sunday scaries feeling and begrudgingly went over all the assignments I needed to complete with disdain. And then I realized this will be the last time I will be thinking of school in my life. I realized I will be graduating in a few weeks, and my time as a Colorado State University student will be over. Suddenly, I felt a surge of nostalgia, and as I sat reminiscing over the past four years, I realized what the time I've spent at CSU has truly meant to me.
