LGBTQ: Phase

Homosexual Couple Kissing (via Wkimedia)

The LGBTQ has made some big strides this year, especially with the June 26th victory over marriage equality this past year. However, there are still many LGBTQ members who phase push back from the closest, quietest, and most hurtful sector: their families.

We still have a problem at the level of acceptance of the family unit. We as a society have made it to the stage where we can say we publicly accept the happiness of others, but we do not want it in our vicinity. We do not want to see public displays, we still avoid talking about it, and we certainly have a problem with it in our families. Many LGBTQ members avoid going home for the holidays, avoid bringing their spouses and partners to meet their parents, and many younger ones are disowned or abandoned. LGBTQ youth make up the largest portion of homeless teens in America, yet many still insist that these truths are irrelevant and that their lifestyle is still a “phase”.

To try and bring light to the problems that still exist in the LGBTQ communities, as well as shed light on the intolerance on what are seen as tolerable or “social justice” platforms such as Tumblr, poets Kevin Kantor and Sienna Burnett made a spoken word poem in support, entitled “Phase”. The original was released on Button Poetry on August 5th, 2015 on YouTube.

Buzzfeed invited the poets back to do an update, more polished version, which was released on the Buzzfeed LGBT page on Friday. If the embed breaks, it can be viewed here.

For Anyone Who’s Been Told It’s “Just A Phase”

How do you think we can get families to start accepting their children? Is it an issue of time and generation, or education and acceptance? How do you feel on the subject? Let us know in the comments!!
