Morantz: My Collegian breakup letter

I’ve been sitting in front of my computer thinking of what The Collegian has meant to me throughout my college career and the same unavoidable answer keeps coming to mind: The Collegian has been my most significant relationship. Accordingly, I felt the most appropriate way for me to fill this column is to treat it as my breakup letter. So brace yourself.

Simply put, writing for The Collegian has been a blur. As I sit down and write this goodbye column, a task I have dreaded due to its sad inclinations, I cannot help but reminisce about all of the amazing article ideas created, friendships made and exciting Sunday mornings spent adding the final touches to a satire article before its noon deadline.

When I first arrived on Colorado State University’s campus almost four years ago, the thought of writing for the school newspaper had never entered my mind. I had virtually no interest in journalism and had practically vowed to stop writing after high school. However, all my plans came to a grinding halt when the pandemic hit and my first year at CSU was essentially cut short. I then realized that my future needed re-evaluating, causing me to leave CSU and spend a year at Front Range Community College.

I first joined The Collegian in Oct. 2020, the first semester back after COVID-19 shut everything down, after hearing about Rocky Mountain Student Media through my news writing class in March 2020. I closed my laptop after the first (virtual) opinion meeting I attended, buzzing. I had never been in a room with so many creative, interesting and curious people.
