The discussion surrounding the evolution of the impression tattoos give existed long before the recent collegiate obsession with them began.
However, because of the this obsession David Strohecker, a sociology doctoral candidate at the University of Maryland, began studying how they changed from branding someone as an inmate to a soldier to a average person looking to label themselves with something personal.

“The stereotype associating tattoos with criminals, ex-convicts and social deviants was formed early and has lingered to this day,” he said to The Diamondback “even though decades after the end of World War II, an entirely new group of people is participating in the art form.”
