Stoners who support Bernie Sanders can now purchase smoking accessories to advertise their political position. “Burners for Bernie” promise that 10 percent of the proceeds will be contributed to Sanders’ campaign.
Ariel Zimman, 29, is based out of Oregon and sells ceramic pipes and chillums with Sanders’ campaign logo emblazoned on top, according to the Center for Public Integrity. The paraphernalia is made in Oregon and sold at a shop called Kathmandu in Florida. The pieces can also be ordered online.
“It was really just a way to show my support for him as a candidate,” Zimman said. “People love (the pipes), and once they hear they are contributing in some way to the campaign, they are all about that, too.”
A Sandler Reiff attorney, Joe Birkenstock, questions the legality of this campaign contribution. He served as the chief counsel of the Democratic National Committee and says that simply claiming proceeds will be given to Sanders is not enough because the products are not licensed.
Although the pieces are not authorized, it is clear Zimman is benefiting the campaign. Therefore, it is unlikely that Sanders will take action against the producers, but she might want to be more careful marketing the product.
