As Told by Tam: Take advantage of internship opportunities while you can

Winter break has come and gone, giving us a new semester, but with this new semester comes new classes, new professors, new stresses and the following fears:

  1. Seniors: What am I going to do when I graduate in May?

  2. Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors: I need to apply for an internship and I do not know where to start.

If you fall into one of these categories, you are not alone. In my opinion, internships do not have to be hard to find and apply for. Below are some internship opportunities for any students looking for something this summer:

For the journalism majors and any major, I recommend talking to your professors about what internships they recommend for you. Now, I know you must be thinking, “My professors do not know me well enough to know what I will be good at,” but you are wrong. Your professors pay attention to your work and if you have taken the time to get to know them, they will be more than happy to help you out. All of the professors I’ve had at CSU have experience working hands-on in some sort of journalism field, ranging from a newspaper reporter to a TV anchor. So, take the time out of your day, email a professor you feel comfortable with and ask them about what internships they recommend. Let them know what field you are in.

For the business majors, you all have an internship coordinator in Nancy Boykin, who is the College of Business Marketing Internship Coordinator, and she is more than happy to help you find an internship. Boykin can be reached through email at Nancy.Boykin@business.colostate.edu.

For the health and exercise science majors, take a look at any gym, public health center or hospital to search for an internship.

Lastly, ask friends who have already had an internship in your field of study where they interned for any advice they can pass along.

If you know anyone at the place you are hoping to intern for, ask if they can put in a good word for you, because that will always give you a leg-up in the application process.

The most important thing about internships is to hop on them now and make sure you look at the deadlines because they will be here before you know it. Good luck, Rams.
