While no studies have concluded that tattoos cause skin cancer, a new study by Nicolas Kluger shows that tattoos can play in a large role in the detection, or failure of, signs of melanoma on the skin, according to the Leader Post.
“The key point is that it’s harder to do the surveillance on moles that are covered by tattoos,” said Hooman Khorasani, director of the skin cancer institute at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, in an interview with the Post.

Large back tattoos and tattoos covering other areas of the body can cover moles that show signs of skin cancer.
