The Colorado State football team hit the field for their thirteenth practice of fall camp on Monday morning.

The team came out in full pads, their first such practice since the team got a day off on Friday.

Quarterback competition could be going for awhile

Nick Stevens is in the midst of a quarterback competition for the second season in a row, and from Coach Mike Bobo’s comments after practice, it sounds like this one could look much like last seasons. Stevens and freshman Coleman Key continued to battle into the season for the starting job last year, and Stevens, senior Faton Bauta and freshman Collin Hill could all be doing the same thing this season.

CSU holds their second scrimmage on Saturday in what will be the second true test for the team in fall camp. Coach Bobo said that he would like to have a starter named after the scrimmage so his team could move forward with the decided starter for the rest of camp, but that does not sound very likely.

“I’d like to, but if i’m not ready I’m not ready,” Bobo said. “We may go into the season. I might play two in the first game, we will see. I might be Steve Spurrier, play three of them.”

Marcus Wilson making his mark

Redshirt sophmore Marcus Wilson made a position change in spring practice, switching from defensive back to wide receiver, a move that has recieved much less attention than that of Jordan Vaden’s conversion.

But Wilson has quietly worked himself into the number one wide recieving unit after joining the position group in the spring. He’s had a good camp so far, and the fact that his play has been overlooked is what Bobo called “oversight by me.”

“He is very conscientiousness, he knows what to get too, he’s always in the right spot,” Bobo said. “He has good speed, he’s working on his hands. His ball skills are improving. He’s a pretty solid number one with the ones when we go through reciever drills. We are really proud of him.”

Promising start derailed

Freshman outside linebacker Arjay Jean is not practicing due to an unspecified injury. English and Bobo liked the way Jean was coming along as a true freshman and were looking for him to step in and play. Known for his pass-rushing ability, the coaches were ready to move Jean up with the number one defensive unit in some pass rush situations before he got injured.

Schlager and Davis continue to be limited

Junior safety Jake Schlager and senior linebacker Kevin Davis continue to be limited in practice as they are both being held out with unspecified injuries. Both players were not at practice on Saturday. Davis came out on Sunday in pads, but did not participate in team drills, while Schlager rejoined the team on the field on Tuesday but he too was held out of drills.
