The Colorado State football team held its first scrimmage of the spring Saturday at Hughes Stadium. The Rams ran 115 plays, highlighted by three touchdown receptions by receiver Xavier Williams. The scrimmage was not open to the public but head coach Mike Bobo was available to the media afterward.

“There’s going to be a lot of tape to learn from,” Bobo said. “They’re going to have to do a good job of getting rest, getting their minds ready, correcting mistakes and getting ready to have a good practice on Tuesday.”

Bobo pointed out that he was impressed with the No. 1 defense getting the better of the No. 1 offense early on.

“Defensively, (linebackers) Kevin Davis and Josh Watson, I kept seeing show up over and over,” Bobo said. “I’ll have to go back and watch the tape a little bit more defensively – because I’m calling the plays offensively – but I thought Josh had a pretty good day.”

Braylin Scott had one interception, and Jake Schlager made an interception that was called back because of a penalty. Jordon Vaden, who converted to defensive back from wide receiver, also caught Bobo’s eye.

“Braylin Scott was active in the back end,” Bobo said. “(Jordon) Vaden did a nice job and Tyree (Simmons) made some tackles. Our (No. 2) corners have got to do a better job. They were beat too many times today.”

Freshman quarterback Collin Hill impressed with the No. 2 offense, but it was junior wideout Xavier Williams who stole the show, catching three touchdowns. Hill threw one of the touchdowns, while returning starter Nick Stevens tossed the other two for Williams.

“I thought he made plays,” Bobo said of Williams. “He had a lot of one-on-one situations last year where the ball was in the air and he didn’t come down with it. You’re not going to win all those, but a guy who’s 6-foot-4 has got to make some plays and he did today. He made the majority of them.”

Bryce Peters led the way in the backfield for the No. 1 offense with Izzy Matthews sidelined by a possible concussion. Danny Nwosu and Nolan Peralta also stood out to Bobo.

CSU continues practicing Tuesday with the ninth of the spring. The NCAA allows for 15 spring practices. The Rams’ spring camp will conclude April 23 with the annual Green and Gold Game.
