Homecoming celebration will include first ever campus street rename in honor of former student

For the first time in Colorado State University history, a campus street is being named after a former student. In honor of Amy Van Dyken, the six-time gold medalist swimmer, 1994 NCAA Swimmer of the Year and 50-yard freestyle NCAA champion, centrally-located West Drive will be renamed Amy Van Dyken Way.

Former CSU swimming head coach John Mattos said in a press release that Van Dyken is strong as an athlete and as person. He said he admires her perseverance after she experienced an ATV accident this summer that paralyzed the former Ram.

“I admired Amy when she won her gold medals, but watching her meet this challenge has been more than inspiring … it’s taken my breath away,” CSU President Tony Frank said in a press release.

The renaming ceremony is taking place Oct. 17 at 11 a.m on the southwest corner of the Oval before the Homecoming parade. Van Dyken is serving as grand marshal of the parade, which will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Colorado State University homecoming activities begin this Sunday and will continue throughout next week. Events include a 5K race, a CSU history tour, campus CLUE, the parade and a pep rally Friday night for the Saturday night Homecoming football game against Utah State.

This year marks the 100th year anniversary of Homecoming at CSU, which began in 1914 when President Charles A. Lory organized an alumni reunion football game against current students at the time.

Homecoming events end Oct. 19 and the week’s activities will wrap up with a student dance in the Lory Student Center Theatre at 7 p.m.
