A Fort Collins citizen has died from injuries sustained during a shooting incident between him and a police officer Sunday.
At 3:45 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a call for a welfare check, with reports of a man lying down in the entryway of an apartment complex on Drake Road and Shields Street.

When an officer responded to the welfare check, the officer came into contact with 27-year-old Tino Martinez in a stairwell at 1030 Davidson Drive. The officer spoke to Martinez for a short period of time, and was gathering information from Martinez when Martinez suddenly produced a handgun and fired the gun at the officer.
The officer was struck in his protective vest and suffered non-life threatening injuries. The officer then returned fire and struck the suspect. They were both transported to the Medical Center of the Rockies, where the suspect died from his injuries. The officer has been released from the hospital.
Colorado State junior journalism major Emily Coffey said she was driving down Drake Road at 3:45 p.m. when she saw police surrounding and pointing guns at a man on the ground.
“Then I saw the man laying down with blood all over his chest,” Coffey said.
Keaton Robinson, junior journalism major at CSU, said he saw the aftermath of the shooting a little after 4 p.m.
Robinson was driving South on Shields Street with his girlfriend, who lives in Cimmaron Square Townhouses, the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. He said he saw 10 to 15 police cars pulled up on a curb and the sidewalk.
“As we pulled up, they started diverting traffic through the apartment complex,” Robinson said.
When Robinson left the complex at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night, he said one patrol car was still on the grass.
An autopsy was performed Monday on Martinez, and it was determined that Martinez died of exsanguination due to single gunshot wound of the lower chest/upper abdomen.

The name of the officer involved is not being released at this time.
