    Rocky Mountain Collegian Digital Producer Job Description

    The Rocky Mountain Collegian is looking for a digital producer who is available as needed when breaking news develops to assist reporters covering breaking news with the online presentation of content on collegian.com. We are looking for students who have an interest in digital journalism and are able to assist busy reporters who are focusing on fact-checking, interviewing, and editing with other essential functions of content production in WordPress to ensure the quality of content published on collegian.com.

    Essential functions of the job include:

    ● Assisting with tagging stories effectively for search results

    ● Adding images and photo galleries to stories (compressed to the correct size specifications)

    ● Adding graphics to stories

    ● Embedding content such as video, Twitter posts, maps ect.

    ● Adding digital blockquotes to stories

    ● Adding meta-descriptions and excerpts to stories and writing promotional posts for Twitter and Facebook.

    Required skills:

    -Advanced proficiency in WordPress

    -Proficiency in HTML5 and basic knowledge of HTML concepts and tags

    -Understanding of SEO principles -Understanding of SMO principles

    -Proficiency in effective tagging on WordPress

    -Understanding of basic UX/UI concepts

    -Background in news or journalism (or enough media literacy to understand the priorities of breaking news/newsworthiness)

    -Basic background on Google Analytics concepts

    Preferred skills:

    -Background knowledge of CSS, Java, or both

    -Advanced understanding of SEO principles

    -Advanced understanding of SMO principles

    -Background skills in web development/web design principles

    -Mastery of Google Analytics -Journalism majors preferred but not required

    Digital producers are paid per night (or day if needed earlier because a breaking news event develops in the daytime) at a rate of $20 per shift. Interested applicants should send an email to Mikaela Rodenbaugh, digital production manager at mrodenbaugh@collegian.com with the subject line: “Digital producer application” and an attached resume and a cover letter detailing why you would be a good fit for the position. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the number of producers needed is hired meaning applicants should apply as soon as possible.
