On the whole, tattoos get a back reputation for being viewed as catalysts for teenage rebellion. However, according to an article in the Reno Gazette-Journal, the industry houses artists of great skill and dedication behind this misinterpreted facade.
“Tattooing is instant gratification,” tattoo artist Thomas Crowder of Pirate Tattoo said in an interview with the Gazette-Journal. “I get to do a piece of artwork on someone that they’re going to have for the rest of their lives, and I get paid for it right away.

Many tattoo artists started as pencil or sketch artists and became interested in the craft after getting their first piece. In Crowder’s case, the death of his father motivated him to get his first tattoo, after which he decided “yup, I want to do that.”
