With many cities falling into disrepair as their occupants move to more prosperous areas, hundreds of thousands of homes stand empty in areas across the country. Photographer Ben Marcin took this opportunity to showcase the sturdiness and determination of houses and families that refuse to fall into disrepair.

Throughout my work there is a sense of isolation, but there is also a strong notion of defiance. Over the last 40 years, due to demographic changes, drugs, violence, a lot of the neighborhoods where I photographed fell into disrepair and entire blocks would be abandoned or demolished. But every now and then you see one of these houses still standing even though everything else is gone.
