Sports briefs: Men’s lacrosse sweeps weekend, track and field take 2nd at MW Indoor Championships

No. 4 CSU men’s lacrosse sweeps weekend to move to 4-0

The 4th-ranked CSU men’s lacrosse team jumped all over the Utah Valley Wolverines on Saturday afternoon, outscoring the visitors 11-1 in the first half en route to a comfortable 15-4 victory at the Loveland Sports Park. CSU wasted no time getting going as sophomore Chase Warner netted two goals less than three minutes into the game.  After UVU’s Algee Baxter answered to make it 2-1, the Rams went on a 10-goal run over the next 30 minutes of game time to put the contest away.

A 20-save performance by sophomore goaltender David Salamie and a dominant defensive effort helped the 4th-ranked Colorado State University Rams defeat No. 7 Boston College 8-4 on Sunday afternoon. The Rams took advantage of an early first half run and then fought tooth and nail with a tough BC team that would not go away.

CSU men’s, women’s track and field teams finish 2nd at Mountain West Indoor Championships

After fighting close battles with New Mexico for the entire day, the Colorado State men’s and women’s teams each claimed second place overall at the indoor conference championship meet in Albuquerque. The men earned 140 points while the women chalked up 96 points throughout the three-day meet, and a number of Colorado State athletes earned all-conference honors for finishing in the top three of their respective events. It was the first time since 2007 that both the men’s and women’s teams finished second or higher at the MW indoor championships.

Highlighting the final day were sophomores Leah Fair and Aaliyah Pete, who each claimed individual conference titles Saturday. Fair, competing in her first season as a Ram, sprinted to a CSU record finish in the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 24.06 seconds. Her performance broke the school record set earlier in the season by teammate Emily Romo.

After setting a new personal record in the weight throw Friday, Pete defended her 2014 MW outdoor championship victory in the shot put with a title of the indoor variety on Saturday. Tossing 53 feet, 7.5 inches, Pete outperformed UNLV’s Mackenna Howard by over a foot for the win.
