Sports brief: CSU soccer draws tie, lose one on the road

The CSU women’s soccer team took another chance this weekend, but couldn’t pull off the program’s first win against a Division I opponent.

The Rams traveled to Fargo, ND for the Doublewood Inn Classic. CSU played North Dakota State on Friday night in a scrappy, tough match but the Rams couldn’t put a goal in the net and fell 1-0. The difference for the Bison was a goal by junior defender Tristyn Walczak off of an assist by freshman Lauren Miller in the 43rd minute.

The Rams (1-4-2) had nine total shots and five on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Seven different Rams played all 90 minutes including standout defenders Jami Vaughn and Megan Speed. The Fort Collins natives are the only two players to play every minute so far this year.

CSU returned to the pitch Sunday morning to play a Southern Illinois-Evansville team that entered the match at 6-1-1. The Rams defense played their best match of the year, holding the Cougars scoreless for only the second time this season. Junior goalkeeper Maggie Sherman made nine saves and posted her first shutout in goal. Forwards Sasha Pchenitchnikova and Erika Bratschun led CSU with two shots a piece.

The Rams begin their first season of Mountain West play this upcoming Friday afternoon against Air Force and play again Sunday against rival Wyoming at the Fort Collins Soccer Complex.
