Our View: #ALSIceBucketChallenge

If you’ve been on social media lately, you probably have been bombarded with videos of your friends, family and coworkers dumping buckets of ice over their heads in support of the fundraising effort to find a cure to ALS, or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

In just three short weeks, the fundraising campaign has raised $41.2 million towards research and a possible cure. On Aug. 21 alone, the ALS foundation received more than $10 million in donations. Celebrities like LeBron James, Eminem, Rihanna and more have taken up the cause, posting their own videos while also donating.

We encourage you as students to participate in the challenge, but also to take the next step and learn about ALS and the issues that surround it. Promoting it on social media by nominating friends and family is only part of the equation. Educate yourself about the disease, its effects, and what you can do to help. Simply donating $10 can make a difference in the lives of those fighting against ALS.
