We all see flyers and banners of all the philanthropies that happen for Greek Life but many of us wonder why are there so many philanthropies occurring in Greek Life. Well when students join these Greek organizations, they are educated to give back to the community. They are not asked to help out the community because they joined a Greek organization but they are invited to give back as human beings who have been privileged to have all the blessings that many are unfortunate to have.
One of the ways to give back was shown by Delta Delta Delta Sorority here at Colorado State University through their national philanthropy for St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital. This hospital was started in Memphis Tennessee and it provides care for the children who can’t afford treatment while also have a research facility to help explore the ways to overcome diseases that the hospital wouldn’t be familiar with. So to raise money, Delta Deta Delta sorority hosts the Delta Day at the Diamond in the spring which is a softball tournament and also known as “Frats and Bats.” In the past, fraternities have participated and competed with each other for wining this tournament but this year when it was held on March 29th, 2014 at the Rolland Moore Park, it had a bigger impact. Elaine Hochberg, the philanthropic chair of Delta Delta Delta, talked about the event and said, “Last year, we had 12 teams participate in this event but this year we had 22 teams and it even included a non Greek organization as well.”
This just shows how important students at CSU care about giving back to the community and don’t differentiate of what organization you belong to because it is for a cause to give back to the community Greek Life reminds us of our responsibility of helping out those who are in need.
