Editor’s Note: Traditionally, graduating seniors working at The Collegian are given the chance to write a farewell note at the end of their tenure at CSU.
As a kid, I dreamed of working at a fashion magazine. I pictured hustling to meet deadlines in a high-rise office, fueled by too much caffeine and surrounded by driven people who cared deeply about what they were creating. I was definitely romanticizing some version of the movie “The Devil Wears Prada,” but at its core, that dream was always about creating, working with passionate people and being a part of something that felt impactful. Little did I know I would find so much of that in the basement of the Lory Student Center.
When I started at The Collegian, I knew very little about journalism or the inner workings of a newsroom. I knew I liked my New York Times subscription, which I had started after following their social media and engaging in their content. I had never considered consuming news media, reading opinion pieces or listening to podcasts. I never really thought about being on the other side and how much care, urgency and intention goes into sharing news media and content.
Two years later, I’m leaving The Collegian with a wealth of experience and a scratch disk full of more social posts than I could ever count. Best of all, I’m leaving with a network of incredible people. The editors, reporters, photographers and collaborators make The Collegian everything it is. They are ambitious, full of curiosity, a little chaotic at times but deeply passionate and good at what they do. I have zero doubt that, within my lifetime, I will watch my fellow College-ians excel at whatever they chose to put their talent and efforts into.
One of those people I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside is Digital Director Gigi Young. Getting to learn from and collaborate with her has made my experience what it is. Gigi, I could not have done it without your wisdom, support or influence.
This role has given me a space to live so much of a younger me’s dream. Thank you, Collegian, for being the experience you were and bringing me the community you did. This social director is logging out! #NewsRocks
