In America, February is most commonly associated with Valentine’s Day and President’s Day. However according to holidayinsights.com, there is a different holiday for almost every day in February.
These range from well-known holidays to those with varied dates such as Chinese New Year, to bizarre holidays such as “Create a Vacuum” Day and “Hoodie-Hoo” Day. Below are descriptions of and the history behind five random February holidays:

Feb. 4 – Create a Vacuum Day:
For all of you vacuum lovers out there, this day enables you to officially celebrate and embrace that love and desire to … create a vacuum. According to holidayinsights.com, there are no official historic records explaining how this day came to be, so I am going to assume those records probably got sucked up by a poorly built vacuum.
Feb. 13 – Blame Someone Else Day:
This holiday technically falls on the first Friday the 13th of the year, and this year that day just so happens to be in February. Friday the 13th is commonly known to be filled with bad luck/ voodoo/ mojo, and serial killers running around abandoned campsites. The good news is that in the spirit of the holiday, feel free to blame someone else for everything that does not go according to plan.
Sylvia Rogan, an equine science junior at Colorado State University, said that Blame Someone Else Day is her favorite February holiday.
“I usually hold myself accountable for a lot of things, and now I could just blame some random person and they won’t even know it’s coming,” Rogan said.
Feb. 14 – Ferris Wheel Day:
Despite all the hype about Valentine’s Day, let us not forget to take a moment and appreciate Ferris wheels. This particular day commemorates the birthday of the creator of the first Ferris wheel, George Washington Gale Ferris Jr.
Austria claims to have created Ferris wheel day and chose Feb. 14 specifically because in Austria, Feb. 14 is historically the most weather-friendly day of the year.

Feb. 15 – Singles Awareness/ Gumdrop Day:
Held appropriately after Valentine’s day, Feb. 15 is the day all the single ladies and gents get to celebrate their single status by eating discounted chocolate and gumdrops. According to nationaldaycalendar.com, Dustin Barnes from Mississippi State University founded this holiday.
He was probably single.
February 20 – Hoodie-Hoo Day
According to holidayinsights.com, this day is copyrighted by health website wellcat.com and dedicated to chasing away the “winter blahs” of being cooped up all day, not going outside and hardly soaking up that sunshine. At noon, people go out of their houses, wave their hands over their heads and repeatedly chant “hoodie-hoo.”
Eileen Silverthorn, sophomore English major at CSU, said Hoodie-Hoo Day is her favorite bizarre February holiday.
“It sounds like it would be an interesting spectacle, and it is important to remember to be silly and just let it all out, especially during those dreary winter months,” Silverthorn said.
