The popularity of henna has been mostly limited to street fairs and cultural events in the past, however the art of tattooing using all-natural henna paste has caught on in the mainstream, according to an article in News Journal.

Henna designs, what some people call a temporary tattoo, are an ancient art form, dating back 6,000 years ago when it was used as a hair dye. Henna, a flowering plant, was also used as a skin dye and played a pivotal role in ancient (and modern) bridal and mating rituals in countries such as Egypt, South Africa and India.
