If you think that being turned to stone only belonged in children’s tales you should take a look at photographer Nick Brandt’s new book Across the Ravaged Land. The photographs document the animals Brandt found on the shore of Lake Natron in northern Tanzania.

According to National Geographic, “Brandt unexpectedly found the dead animals that had washed up on the shore, preserved by the lake, and posed them as they had been in life.”

The lake receives alkali-rich natrocarbonatites from a nearby volcano, Ol Doinyo. The high-PH of the waters cause the creatures that fall into it to calcify.
