The evolution of tattoos began with Ötzi, a Neolithic man, before it spread to Egypt. However, British sailors first experienced what became modern tattooing from their time in Tahiti and returned to home with their traditional tattoos. Now, 40 percent of Americans under 40 sport tattoos, according to Gizmodo.

In 1891, New York tattooist Samuel O’Reilly patented the modern two-coil electromagnetic tattoo needle, borrowing the design from Thomas Edison’s electric pen. The basic concept behind the device is still what powers tattoo machines today. What’s improved dramatically, however, is the ink that goes along with it.

However, new innovations lie in gadgets as tattoos and not within the ink itself anymore.
