Lopez: Dropping out sounds nice, but persevering is better

Dominique Lopez, Opinion Columnist December 7, 2021
The semester's end is finally within reach, and with that comes the stress of finals and the beginning of deterioration. After coming back from fall break and walking to and from classes again, you might hear people talk about their desire to drop out, as if to jokingly find the comedic relief they need to make it to the end.

Cooke: The Collegian is a home for aspirational students

Cody Cooke, Opinion Director December 6, 2021
I joined The Collegian’s opinion desk in December 2019 knowing absolutely nothing about writing for a newspaper besides the fact that I wanted to do it. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was surprised when I showed up to my first meeting in the newsroom to find a table full of students just like me ricocheting ideas off one another.

The holiday season is now in full swing, and you know what that means! It’s time to dig deep into the holiday spirit! The stress of gift-giving and decorating your home to ensure that your family doesn’t appear dysfunctional to the rest of the neighborhood can make a person crazy, so here I am, giving you the gift of all gifts: A very merry Craigslist Christmas.

Dylan Tusinski, Collegian Columnist December 1, 2021
A little over a week ago, Kyle Rittenhouse, the 18-year-old who shot and killed two protestors before injuring a third, was found not guilty on all counts by a Wisconsin jury. People have been arguing endlessly over whether the verdict was just or not.

On Thursday, September 30, 2021, the cover of The Collegian newspaper featured an illustration of a blue-haired police officer standing in front of a police vehicle, enticing readers to examine an article titled, “CSUPD Mental Health Co-Responder Program Launches.” The article reports that the Colorado State University Police Department and UCHealth are partnering to send two-person teams — one behavioral health officer and one police officer — to intervene in situations the police deem capable of being de-escalated.

Shortly after coming back to Colorado State University’s campus after fall break, sophomore Allen Wrench discovered that his bike had been stolen yet again. “I was fed up to say the least,” Wrench said. “Even my roommate’s bike got stolen last month and his bike was a piece of shit.”
Meltzner: CSU's history of student activism is worth celebrating

Meltzner: CSU’s history of student activism is worth celebrating

JD Meltzner, Opinion Columnist November 30, 2021
Colleges campuses often serve as a ground-zero of sorts for national social movements that have lived on into the 21st century. Some notable examples of collegiate activism may come to mind first: the Berkeley Free Speech Movement, The Harvard student strike of 1969 against the Vietnam War or even the tragic shooting at the Kent State University protests.

LFTE: History is not black and white: Why we made this special edition

Katrina Leibee and Serena Bettis November 18, 2021
As November is Indigenous History Month, and The Collegian staff has many history buffs in its midst, we wanted to create a special edition that would incorporate the history of this land and the stories of this City and campus that we call home. The intent of this publication is to learn and understand what came before us, while both celebrating and critiquing our roots, both at Colorado State University and in the Northern Colorado area.

If you live in Fort Collins, chances are you’re familiar with the U+2 law. According to the City of Fort Collins, the law states: “Occupancy in a residential dwelling unit (single-family, duplex and multifamily) is restricted to one family ... and not more than one additional person; or one adult and their dependents (if any), a second adult and their dependents (if any) and not more than one additional person."

Lopez: Public schools can teach better Indigenous history

Dominique Lopez November 16, 2021
Imagine sitting down in a middle school or high school history class. You might recognize the seats around you and see the familiar faces, but what history do you remember learning in that class?
