McKissick: Stan culture is toxic and unhealthy

McKissick: Stan culture is toxic and unhealthy

Nathaniel McKissick, Collegian Columnist January 19, 2022
The COVID-19 pandemic has driven us into the throes of the inside world, so it should come as no surprise that people are increasingly using the internet to engage with others and foster interpersonal relationships. A certain type of relationship, however – those of the para-social variety – has created a culture that promotes obsession and delusion. I’m referring to relationships between influencers or celebrities and their stans.
Eckburg: Finals are stressful, so stop gendering self-care

Eckburg: Finals are stressful, so stop gendering self-care

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Editor December 9, 2021
In life amid a pandemic, we all could use a little self-care, especially as we exit dead week and make our way to the final week of the semester; one full of stress and tests and the luxury of break peeking over the horizon.  When you think of self-care, a few images may come to mind — a glistening face mask, a manicure, a long bubble bath — but there’s something clearly missing in these spas and salons: the men.
Gross: Stop complaining, do what's right, wear a mask

Gross: Stop complaining, do what’s right, wear a mask

Dillon Gross, Collegian Columnist December 8, 2021
We're entering our third year of the pandemic and people are still refusing to properly wear their masks. Stop being selfish, do what's right and protect yourself and your community.

Meltzner: We need to change the final grading structure

JD Meltzner, Collegian Columnist December 8, 2021
Our academic futures should not be decided by the results of a few weeks of schoolwork, and we should not be forced to forfeit grades in some areas for better grades in others.
Ziel: Goodbye, Collegian — the shining star of my college experience

Ziel: Goodbye, Collegian — the shining star of my college experience

Renee Ziel, Night Editor December 7, 2021
Contrary to the journalist I am now, I came into The Collegian a bumbling mess. The copy desk didn’t have room for me at the time, so I went to opinion when they were in want of writers, and thus began my unforgettable Collegian experience.

Tusinski: In this house, we believe your yard sign is performative

Dylan Tusinski, Collegian Columnist December 7, 2021
Last year's presidential election was a political turf war in the most literal sense. As the election created a divisive political environment in the U.S., the tenseness of the moment created a series of proxy wars on lawns across America.
Lopez: Dropping out sounds nice, but persevering is better

Lopez: Dropping out sounds nice, but persevering is better

Dominique Lopez, Opinion Columnist December 7, 2021
The semester's end is finally within reach, and with that comes the stress of finals and the beginning of deterioration. After coming back from fall break and walking to and from classes again, you might hear people talk about their desire to drop out, as if to jokingly find the comedic relief they need to make it to the end.
Seriously: Lam the Ram apprehended for serial bike theft

Seriously: Lam the Ram apprehended for serial bike theft

Callum Burke, Opinion Columnist December 6, 2021
More information is available on the cloaked bike thief roaming around campus. Allen Wrench, the Colorado State University sophomore who brought this issue to light, devised a plan to catch the vile person stealing bikes.

Cooke: The Collegian is a home for aspirational students

Cody Cooke, Opinion Director December 6, 2021
I joined The Collegian’s opinion desk in December 2019 knowing absolutely nothing about writing for a newspaper besides the fact that I wanted to do it. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was surprised when I showed up to my first meeting in the newsroom to find a table full of students just like me ricocheting ideas off one another.
Seriously: Have a very merry Craigslist season

Seriously: Have a very merry Craigslist season

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Editor December 2, 2021
The holiday season is now in full swing, and you know what that means! It’s time to dig deep into the holiday spirit! The stress of gift-giving and decorating your home to ensure that your family doesn’t appear dysfunctional to the rest of the neighborhood can make a person crazy, so here I am, giving you the gift of all gifts: A very merry Craigslist Christmas.

Today, Dec. 1, marks the 130th anniversary of The Collegian’s first publication. Over that time, we’ve undergone countless changes as we constantly raced to keep up with the ever-changing world of journalism.
Tusinski: Rittenhouse verdict threatens to normalize political violence

Tusinski: Rittenhouse verdict threatens to normalize political violence

Dylan Tusinski, Collegian Columnist December 1, 2021
A little over a week ago, Kyle Rittenhouse, the 18-year-old who shot and killed two protestors before injuring a third, was found not guilty on all counts by a Wisconsin jury. People have been arguing endlessly over whether the verdict was just or not.
