Henry: CSU isn't an airline, so why did it oversell parking passes?

Henry: CSU isn’t an airline, so why did it oversell parking passes?

Brendan Henry, Collegian Columnist September 19, 2022
Parking passes are not a cheap expense at Colorado State University. The annual cost for a Z permit pass, allowing the permit holder to access the Z, R and ZR parking spots, is a whopping $584. That kind of money is enough to buy a PlayStation 5 — so you would also expect, at the very least, to be able to park in the lot you paid for.  Like airlines oversell tickets, CSU oversold parking passes. Instead of figuring out where to put the excess cars before the semester started, CSU waited until Sept. 8 to send out an email detailing additional parking locations for pass holders.

Gross: College is a time for piercings — here are the 4 to get

Dillon Gross, Collegian Columnist September 14, 2022
A new season is stirring here at Colorado State University. Is it from college students back on campus, learning the ins and outs of their classes? Or is it the autumnal pumpkin spice starting to brew in the air as it gets cooler? Nope. It’s piercing season.

Burke: Fort Collins embraces graffiti art without the vandalism

Callum Burke, Collegian Columnist September 13, 2022
No one can deny how pleasing to the eye graffiti can be, especially in a town as art-oriented as Fort Collins. Our city is full of public art and seems to embrace the talents of those willing to show it off. Unfortunately, this does not mean anyone who possesses a can of spray paint is able to go to the first brick wall they see fit and start to scribble a cartoon dog or write their name in bubble letters.

Burke: 5 ways to stay active while the Rec Center stays busy

Callum Burke, Collegian Columnist September 8, 2022
Another school year has commenced, and with the new semester comes new foolish-minded activities and disciplines attempted to become everyday habits by students. Atop the list of those habits is developing a regular workout routine, usually implementing the many luxuries offered by the Colorado State University Student Recreation Center.

Henry: Get some respect — keep that American flag at half-staff

Brendan Henry, Collegian Columnist September 8, 2022
Walking through campus, you may sometimes notice the American flag is positioned at half-staff. It seems to be that way everywhere, all the time. In the past, it was easy to identify why the flag was positioned this way — a time of mourning across America or a state — but it never seems to rise back up into its official position.  Now, call me a pessimist (I already know), but why not just keep the flag at half-staff permanently? Sure, we grieve over the deaths of politicians and important figures, but are we not also grieving over inflation, unaffordable housing, lack of workers' rights, division among our people and daily injustices committed by and against our own people?

Stella: Let’s take a look back at the Joyce McConnell years

Michael Stella, Collegian Columnist September 8, 2022
Joyce McConnell's tenure as president of Colorado State University was historic from the moment she was hired. McConnell was the first woman hired as president in the university's 152-year-long history. Although McConnell's time at CSU was short — she only served from 2019-22 — she oversaw one of the most tumultuous eras in Colorado history. Within a year of becoming president, McConnell had to lead the university through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blouch: The real issues with ASCSU are internal

Cat Blouch, Social Media Editor September 7, 2022
What do you think of when you hear about the Associated Students of Colorado State University? For some students at Colorado State University, ASCSU is a place where they can make an impact. Other students hear about the organization in passing, such as during election season, while the remainder of students don’t know what ASCSU is or what they are responsible for.

Lopez: Welcome to adulthood; let’s set some goals

Dominique Lopez, Collegian Columnist September 5, 2022
With the new school year upon us, that means a year of new beginnings — a year of creating the changes and goals we hope to achieve throughout the year. The new school year creates a moment for us to rewrite the past, change the future and hold ourselves accountable for maintaining the new selves we strove to create in the beginning.

Gross: Partying in college is fun but not integral to your experience

Dillon Gross, Collegian Columnist August 30, 2022
The first few weeks at college are exciting, especially for first-year students. Meeting new friends, attending the first of many lectures and learning the ins and outs of Fort Collins are a few of many things new Colorado State University students can look forward to. However, with the first few weeks come the first few weekends, when the expectation is seemingly to party like Monday is never coming.

Take a quick second out of your day and look outside to observe the vivacious greenery offered by our beautiful state of Colorado. No matter where you decide to look, a tree species of some sort is bound to be within sight, and that is no coincidence. Trees are vitally important to our ecosystem, and it doesn't hurt that they look so majestic swaying left to right in a calm breeze.

Tusinski: Red Rocks is starting to tumble downhill

Dylan Tusinski, Collegian Columnist August 28, 2022
The fall semester just started, and tons of Colorado State University students have arrived in Fort Collins — many from out of state — and are all looking for Colorado-y things to do in their new home. One of the first boxes freshly minted Coloradans seek to check off is seeing a concert at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre. Take it from someone who has lived in Colorado their entire life and has seen upward of 25 concerts on the rocks: It isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Henry: The job market sucks, but New Belgium Brewing doesn’t

Brendan Henry, Collegian Columnist August 22, 2022
Colorado State University students over 21 years old should take some time to check out Fort Collins' New Belgium Brewing. If somehow you have not yet ventured to the locally beloved brewery, you will be pleasantly surprised by the upbeat culture of both the employees and the local beer drinkers. The brewery’s story begins in 1988, when Kim Jordan and Jeff Lebesch went on a bike trip through Belgium, taking note of the different brewing processes the Belgians used. Jordan and Lebesch went on to install brewing equipment in their home in Fort Collins in 1991, and their beer grew in popularity, not only becoming a local favorite but also being put on the shelves of stores all around the country.
