Miller: COVID-19 made college less challenging, your degree less competitive

Miller: COVID-19 made college less challenging, your degree less competitive

Jack Miller, Staff Reporter February 14, 2023
Although the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t as severe as it once was, there are still systems in our society that have yet to come back to normal. An example of this is our education system.   Blind-sided by the pandemic, schools quickly went to online learning which led to different curriculum, different activities and different systems of grading. Although we are done with nationwide zoom classes, many classes still offer hybrid options, online tests and flexible deadlines.

Peck: FoCo citizens, town benefit from active transportation

Aaron Peck, Staff Reporter February 6, 2023
Fort Collins holds over 200 miles of dedicated bike lanes making it one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country. Given the high student population in the city, these bike lanes provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way for students to move around.   Building bike lanes may appear like a simple change in city design, but its consequences prove to be beneficial for the community’s quality of life. In Dec. 2022, the City of Fort Collins adopted the Active Modes plan which aims to promote walking, biking and other modes of active transportation.

Eckburg: We shouldn’t have to justify absences

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director February 1, 2023
College life can act as a bridge to your adulthood and career — you take specialized classes while often working or maintaining an internship, and that can be a lot of stress! Sometimes, college life can make you feel like your brain is melting.  So, when those days pop up, and you’ve realized it’s mid-week and you have not had a single day that was not dedicated to working a full shift or attending a full course load — or both! — and your brain melt is fully initiated, it’s okay to skip class.

Callum Burke, Staff Reporter January 26, 2023
Snow is an integral part of the Colorado winter lifestyle, and Fort Collins is no exception.  On average, Fort Collins receives nearly 48 inches of snowfall annually, and with that comes a lot of fun prospects involving the powdery fluff blinding you from your kitchen window.

Tusinski: University marches for MLK Day, ignores #NotProudToBe demands

Dylan Tusinski, Staff Reporter January 24, 2023
A week ago, roughly 1,500 people gathered and marched to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The group of Colorado State University students, Fort Collins community members and Colorado activists symbolically marched on a route that acknowledged Black families that settled in Fort Collins in the early 1900s and culminated in a set of speeches at the Lory Student Center from local politicians and community leaders. Only 250 people stuck around for the speeches following the march.

Eckburg: A tuition increase is not the answer, students assemble

Bella Eckburg, Opinion Director January 19, 2023
Colorado State University's Board of Governors is planning a tuition increase for the coming year, which will continue to widen the gap between it and the national average for in-and-out-of-state tuition.  This new tuition increase comes amid a lot of turmoil regarding faculty and staff pay on campus, especially with Colorado’s minimum wage reaching $13.65 this year; however, is CSU really able to justify the rise in tuition considering the value of the degree the students leave with?
Tusinski: CSU's women's hockey team deserves your support, not sexism

Tusinski: CSU’s women’s hockey team deserves your support, not sexism

Dylan Tusinski, Staff Reporter December 8, 2022
First and foremost: Yes, Colorado State University has a Division I women's hockey team, and they're really good. The team is currently sitting at fourth in the standings with an 8-5-0 record to start the season. They've won multiple games with points in the double digits, including a 16-0 blowout against rival University of Wyoming. Even with all their success, the team was the subject of sexist harassment that underscores a problematic culture within the hockey community.
Henry: Title IX should educate more on sex-based discrimination

Henry: Title IX should educate more on sex-based discrimination

Brendan Henry, Staff Reporter December 7, 2022
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 offers governmentally regulated protection from sex-based discrimination in schools and programs that are provided with federal financial assistance. It covers both educational and athletic activities, and you are more likely to hear about it when speaking of athletics. According to the U.S. Department of Education, Title IX impacts “approximately 17,600 local school districts, over 5,000 postsecondary institutions and charter schools, for-profit schools, libraries and museums.”
Burke: Title IX is not just about sports, it includes all of us

Burke: Title IX is not just about sports, it includes all of us

Callum Burke, Staff Reporter December 6, 2022
The discussion of Title IX, specifically within a collegiate setting, is not uncommon. It is a topic mentioned in classrooms, lecture halls and even in passing conversations on campus among students. But seldom do those discussions lead beyond the notion of the amendment giving women equal opportunities within sports.  Although true, and playing a pivotal role in the popularity of Title IX, there is much more to the amendment than equal sporting opportunities that a regular student should be able to comprehend.
Stella: Let's look for and celebrate women leaders at CSU

Stella: Let’s look for and celebrate women leaders at CSU

Michael Stella, Staff Reporter December 5, 2022
In 2019, Joyce McConnell was named the first woman president in Colorado State University's more than 150-year history. Then, over last summer and after a mutual agreement with the CSU System Board of Governors, her tenure of only three years came to an end. The decision to let McConnell go was not only a shortsighted move for the university in a number of ways, but it also comes at a time when women's voices need to be elevated.

Stella: The youth vote won the election, saved democracy

Michael Stella, Staff Reporter December 3, 2022
A red wave was all pundits talked about in regard to the 2022 midterms, but when the votes were counted, it turned out to be more like a red drop.  The Democratic Party has many different voting blocs to be thankful for this post-election holiday season, but one they should be the most thankful for is the youth voters of America.
Henry: Social media is making people angrier

Henry: Social media is making people angrier

Brendan Henry, Staff Reporter November 30, 2022
Social media can be utilized as a tool to stay up to date with friends and family, but it can also be used to perpetuate one’s views on issues around the world. How often have we gone on social media only to find an opposing opinion that makes us upset or angry? There is an appeal to finding these posts and joining in on the argument.  The social media sphere holds the opinions of many of our friends and family, and in an era of political divisiveness and significant decision making, there are always differing opinions to be found. Conversations that would not be had in person are written out online under the shield of a profile picture. There is a particular thrill to being angry, and this anger is extremely easy to find on any social media platform.
