Colorado State adds four commits to 2016 football recruiting class

CSU added four commitments to its 2016 class, giving the Rams 22 commitments just three days before signing day.

The Rams started off the weekend with a verbal pledge from Eastern Arizona College athlete Detrich Clark, rated as a two-star recruit by Rivals.com. Clark held offers from Georgia Southern, Arkansas State and Southern Miss after totaling more than 1,400 yards last season as EAC’s quarterback. He’s expected to play wide receiver and return kicks and punts at CSU.

Sunday, however, was where the Rams had their biggest day, reeling in three recruits, including former UCLA pledge Chris Gaston. The 6-foot-2 defensive back from Bishop Amat (CA) High School de-committed from UCLA after having limited contact with the Bruins over the past few months, and chose CSU over Arkansas State, San Jose State, Wyoming and Idaho.

CSU also added to its defensive secondary with former UTEP commit Robert Awunganyi, who announced his intentions to play at CSU over Twitter early Sunday afternoon. Awunganyi, who visited CSU on Jan. 15, chose the Rams over Illinois, UTEP, San Diego State and Arkansas State. Rated a two-star recruit by Rivals, Awunganyi is expected to play either safety or cornerback for the Rams after playing on both offense and defense in high school.

Sandwiched in between Gaston and Awunganyi’s announcements was the pledge of St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) defensive end/outside linebacker Arjay Jean, who also announced his commitment via Twitter. Jean, who measures at 6-foot-3 and 217 pounds, played opposite five-star Ohio State pledge Joey Bosa at St. Thomas Aquinas, totaling three sacks and 18 tackles during his senior season, which was cut short just seven games in by an elbow injury. He was expected to take to take a visit to Iowa State before signing day, but canceled it after his visit to CSU this weekend.

Wednesday marks the first day that recruits enrolling in either the summer or fall semesters can sign their National Letter of Intent. Stay tuned to collegian.com for updates leading up to signing day as well as live commitment tracker on the big day.
