CSU football notes: Preseason Camp Day 6

Players respond after “disappointing practice”

Mike Bobo was visibly and audibly upset after Tuesday’s practice, CSU’s first in full pads during preseason camp. But so were his players. Multiple players verbalized their frustrations yesterday after practice, lamenting that they were “better” than this kind of performance. On Wednesday, both Bobo and his offensive players were pleased with their effort, intensity and performance, noting that this was how every practice should be.

“Yesterday was a bad day, and as Coach (Bobo) said, we didn’t really want to be champions, which is what our motto is,” senior tackle Sam Carlson said. “Today we just came together, especially as an offense, and we just brought it. I don’t know that we did anything drastically different, the mindset was just different and we felt that, and I think it showed when we practiced out there. We’ve got guys who haven’t been in the leadership role, myself included, so it’s something we need to work on to make sure we step up and lead and make sure those type of days don’t happen.”

Twice is nice

Wednesday was also the beginning of the first of five days with two practices, or “two-a-days.” The team completed a two-hour practice this morning on the outdoor fields south of Moby Arena and will head indoors into their 70-yard indoor practice facility tonight for a session that kicks off at 7:15 p.m.

He’s baaaaaaack

Senior defensive end SteveO Michel joined the team for the first time in preseason camp on Wednesday after dealing with “some personal issues,” according to Bobo. Michel, along with freshman defensive lineman O’Shea Jackson, who also reported for the first time Wednesday, are required by NCAA rules to have two days in only helmets and two days in shells (helmets and shoulder pads) before being able to don full pads and participate in contact drills.

Injury report

Offensive lineman Jordan Benson rode the stationary bike for the second day in a row with a walking boot on his left foot after suffering an injury during Monday’s practice. He was joined by defensive back Devin Smith, who has yet to participate in camp, and Jake Schlager, who sat out last season with a leg injury. Bobo gave no updates on when any of the three would be participating again.
