CSU is turning Earth Day into Earth Week.
Tuesday is the annual Earth Day Festival, hosted by Housing and Dining Services. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., students can gather under the trees on the corner of Plum and Meridian for a sustainability fair hosting over 40 vendors with green initiatives.
In addition to a live performance from the 14ers, Housing and Dining Services is going to be providing what they’re calling “Earth Cookies” as a part of their compost display.
“It’s one of those things for people who have an hour between classes and want to check out what’s going on, learn a bit, grab a cookie and listen to some live music,” said Tim Broderick, sustainability coordinator for Housing and Dining Services.
According to Broderick, Housing and Dining recognize that sustainability is hugely important to CSU and this festival is a chance for people to come together and celebrate sustainability efforts.
“Sustainability is such a huge part of CSU and is a big part of many students’ belief systems so this is an opportunity for everyone to learn about what CSU and the city of Fort Collins are doing to help,” Broderick said.
Following today’s festivities, Parking and Transportation Services are extending the holiday by having an event to celebrate transportation that is easier on the environment every day for the rest of the week.
Wednesday brings “Bike to Breakfast” from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m, where students riding their bikes to campus can go to the corner of University and Meridian for one of 300 breakfast burritos.
Thursday offers a similar treat with “Long board to Lunch” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Also at the intersection of University and Meridian, the first 100 students on long boards will receive free hot dogs.
Both days also offer opportunities for additional prizes and giveaways.
The week ends with Friday’s “Bus to Barista” from 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. when students taking the bus to campus can get free coffee coupons at the LSC Transit Station.
“It’s such a valuable thing to have our students travelling in a different way,” said Aaron Fodge, Alternative Transportation Manager. “It helps to save parking space on campus, and it’s a healthier way to travel.”
The benefits of these green transportation methods are something worth celebrating, according to Fodge.
“Students travelling a different way and saving money and being healthy is definitely something we want to support on campus,” Fodge said.
Alexis Canfield, sophomore social work major, expressed her Earth Day excitement through a play on words and accompanying finger guns:
“Earth day is great! It gives us the opportunity to go back to our natural roots…Get it?”
