Laurie Wicker, who is a CSU alumna who lives in Rockaway Beach, Oregon, took pictures of U.S. Coast Guard efforts to rescue Allen and his son. Wicker explained how "sneaker waves," which are tall waves that travel far up the beach without warning, often occur at Oregon beaches, especially in Rockaway Beach. "There have been deaths at nearby beaches," Wicker said. "As a permanent resident here I try and warn people as I’m walking the beach if I see someone that may be unaware of the dangers especially if it involves young children.
