This Saturday, Fashion Group International student designers plan to take over the LSC Ballroom for their annual fashion show, “Pop Couture: Off the Canvas and Onto the Runway.”
This year’s theme is pop art, and Daniele Croteau, president of FGI and sophomore fashion merchandising major, began planning months ago. They open the event to all hopeful student designers.

“In the spring, the department puts on a show for the senior design students, where they can showcase all their work, so we try and do something for the work they don’t put in there and for the beginning design students,” Croteau said.
As with other years, the show contains pieces made from unconventional material.
“The main focus is recycled, so students from one of our classes make garments from either recycled or repurposed material,” Croteau said.
Jack Savoie, freshman fashion major and FGI member, worked in a group of four to create a garment that he hopes to see walk the runway.
“We took newspaper and we took chicken wire and we made a tea-length skirt out of the chicken wire and then we papier-mached the newspaper onto the form of skirt,” Savoie said. “The top we also made out of newspaper.”
He sees the benefits of working with his classmates on the design process.
“We all have different views on how we want to do things, but at the end of the day we all collaborate,” Savoie said.
The show also opens itself to designs outside of the class and the department.
“We do some other pieces that anyone can submit and that could really be anything, so we’ve gotten more recycled pieces or just anything that any of the design students have created,” Croteau said.

Madalyne Staab, co-head of the stage/decor committee, helps to ensure the production of the show matches the theme.
“For this year’s show, the theme’s pop art, so we’re focusing on a huge canvas. Our tagline is ‘Off the canvas, onto the Runway,’” Staab said.
Fashion Group International hopes for a packed show, with people coming out the see the work created by students who’ve put in hours of work.
“I know my group has put in a lot of work and I’m sure all the other groups have, too. So I think just seeing the end result is always the most exciting part,” Staab said.
The creations themselves will make the work and show worth it.
“Just seeing it all finally coming together – I’m excited about that,” Croteau said. “And then just to see the garments actually walking, because they’ve been hanging on racks. They all look incredible, but it’s different to see them walking on models through the runway with all the lights.”
The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the LSC Box Office or online at csutix.com. They are $8 for students and $10 for general admission.
