Colorado State’s J.J. Avila named MW Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

Colorado State forward J.J. Avila was named Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday for his season-high 29-point outburst Saturday in a 79-73 win over San Diego State.

The 6-foot-8 senior from McAllen, Texas went 12 of 16 from the field including a floater with 17 seconds left to seal the victory for the Rams. He also recorded three rebounds, two assists and two steals in win.

Avila, a 2013-2014 All-MW Third Team selection, is averaging team bests in scoring (15.7 points per game), rebounding (7.4 per game) and steals (1.9 per game), and is second on the Rams in assists (3.1 per game).

He is the second CSU player to earn the award this season. Senior guard Daniel Bejarano was named conference player of the week on Nov. 10, 2014.
