Unbelievable violence from parents to kids must stop

Anytime I am feeling particularly confident about the future of humanity, it is inevitable that I will get online, click on a dramatic story on my MSN homepage and immediately become depressed about society.

This happened again very recently, when I ran across a story about how a father brutally beat his teenage girls after catching them making a twerking video. The video itself is pretty awful; the father grabs what appears to be an extension cord and then proceeds to attack his daughters (who would eventually need to go to the hospital).

The beating crossed the line of being disciplinary as soon as he decided he was using an extension as a weapon.

The daughters were forced to take turns getting beat by their father, and he backed each one into a corner and really stepped into each swing. This man is quite literally a monster. And as disgusting and disgraceful as his actions were, there is another component to this story that makes it even worse.

After reading over the article and watching the video a few times just to make sure I was really seeing this, I perused the comment section and this is really where the scum of the Earth must go to hang out.

I could not believe that a very sizeable majority of the commenter’s agreed with the father’s actions and sympathized with him. Saying things such as “the girls definitely deserved it.” Or “He is just disciplining the kids the way he sees fit.”

There are so many things wrong with these statements; it’s almost unbelievable that anyone would actually say that, except for the fact that different people were reiterating basically those same things throughout the entire comment section.

First of all, it is totally unacceptable and downright wrong for any parent to cross the line into torture when disciplining a child. There is absolutely no reason to beat your children until they have welts. To do so is a sign of idiocy and extremely poor parenting. One does not need children to understand that beating them ruthlessly is wrong.

It further amazes me that people stood up for the father on the basis that they were his children and he was just disciplining them. First of all, children are not some commodity that one owns and can just wail on whenever it strikes your fancy. Abusing children is a societal issue because we have a social contract to ensure the safety of everyone, from the time they are born ’till they die.

Also, it is quite clear that he was not just disciplining the two daughters. He was out to make them suffer and feel pain, which is not how you teach kids a lesson. If a parent cannot find a way to teach their kids right from wrong without resorting to physical violence, then they do not deserve to have children. No matter how much they cry, beg or piss you off, you cannot beat them like they are a dirty rug.

The girls in the video were teenagers, and, being teens, they are capable of at least limited reasoning and processing skills. Thus, it would have been equally possible, and much more father-like, to simply sit the daughters down and discuss their actions with them, like any normal person would do.

Instead, a father beating his daughters like this sends all of the wrong messages, such as, it is OK for a man they love to beat and hit them. This is totally wrong, but that is what this action is imprinting on the minds of the daughters.

And finally, it is just total cowardice on the part of the father to whip his daughters like that. It seems he had some really built up anger or something and decided to take it out on them. At least he’ll pay for it with lots and lots of jail time.

I really hope that the people commenting on the article were maybe just trolling. At the very least, I sincerely hope those people never have children and subject them to the cruelty that they so obviously think is acceptable. It doesn’t matter if your parents hit you with the belt (mine did), there is simply no reason to continue that cycle of childhood psychological torture into the 21st century.
