While no link between tattoo ink and the development of cancer, experts say that large, dark tattoos can make detection of melanoma hard for doctors, according to an article from Canada’s CTV News.
“The key point is that it’s harder to do the surveillance on moles that are covered by tattoos,” said Dr. Hooman Khorasani, director of the skin cancer institute at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, in an interview with CTV.

That being said, experts advice people with lots of moles and light skin to avoid getting tattoos so that melanoma detection is not hindered later in life.
